Ink Cans

A few nights ago, around 2 a.m., I was lying in bed minding my own business when my wife started a conversation with me. Mind you, we had been asleep for a few hours, and along comes this interruption. I pretended I was asleep. She continued.

I guess my possum is getting a little rusty, because before I knew it we were chatting up a storm.

Interruptions come at the most inconvenient times, especially at work. Results of a recent survey in The Virginian-Pilot noted interruptions are the second leading cause of distractions in a worker's schedule. E-mail was first.

These famous words are heard tens of thousands of times a day: "Hey, you got a minute?"Honestly, if it weren't for interruptions, I don't know what I would do at work.

I have often wondered why it's OK to interrupt at work, but being a buttinsky in the check-out line is forbidden. Few people would stand for that, but aren't they the same thing?

Interruptions are a part of business. Yet, too many can distract and cause an atmosphere of chaos and confusion. I personally feel that not enough requests for my opinion and time makes me feel isolated and too distant from the people around me.

You see, interruptions are perfect mentoring situations. Very seldom do I ever show frustration or anger at being pulled from my task at hand.

I am just an average Joe, though, and there are times that I have had a heated reaction.
