Pinch me. I THINK I'M DREAMING...

For close to 22 years I've been a corporate man - working in Corporate America - doing what I was told and hoping that things would get better. By the way, those years also represent a little stint in the dotcom frenzy.

Boy that was a chariot on fire, but everyone wanted to ride it. I think the only person who didn't was Warren Buffett.

He's now my hero because he's smarter than me.

So after all this time I've given up the expense accounts, the layers of ineffective management and the paralysis that follows to become a small business owner.

I am the heartbeat of my company. I will make or break it. There are no safety nets here. Am I wet-my-pants scared? You bet. What a plunge. I don't even know how to work the cash register.

It reminds me of an old rope swing. You see others doing it and you say, "That's easy." So you grab the rope. Take a running start andall of a sudden you're 15 feet above Water.

It surprises you at first. Your heart's in your throat and the fear can be overwhelming. But you have to let go. It's a matter of pride.

Somehow your clenched fingers release and you're taking the plunge. Before you know it, you make a splash and you're swimming to the bank to do it all over again. The initial doubts and anxieties are gone. It's exhilarating after the fear abates.
